Island County, Washington State, DUI emphasis patrols nab 18 DUI drivers

Sep 16 2008

Island County law enforcement agencies issued 18 DUI citations in 17 days as part of a statewide enforcement campaign, according to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.

State officials said the crackdown here and across Washington helped prevent drunk-driving deaths this summer.

“Washington had four traffic fatalities during the Labor Day weekend, and none involved drugs or alcohol,” said Lowell Porter, director of the commission.

“It has been six years since a Labor Day holiday was free from a traffic death due to alcohol.”

The agency’s emphasis campaign was entitled, “Drive Hammered — Get Nailed.”

DUI News from Anacortes, Skagit County

DUI News from Anacortes, Skagit County:

On February 21, 2010, an Anacortes officer stopped a car in the 1000 block of Commercial Avenue for speeding just after midnight. The driver, a 30-year-old Texas man, smelled strongly of intoxicants and said he was unaware how fast he was traveling. The man had bloodshot, watery eyes and allegedly admitted he had three beers. He allegedly failed field sobriety tests and was arrested on a charge of DUI. He refused to take a breath test at the station and was booked into jail.

A quick note about the story’s allegation about “failed field sobriety” tests.  NHTSA never uses the word “fail.”  Second, rarely are field sobriety tests done in accordance with NHTSA in the field.  As a result performance on these tests is very much a subject of great debate.

Grandfather Charged With DUI While Holding Boy

Tenn. Man Had 2-Year-Old In Arms

COLLEGEDALE, Tenn. -- An East Tennessee grandfather has been charged with endangerment after police said they stopped him while he was driving, drinking and holding his grandson in his arms. WRCB in Chattanooga reported the man was stopped because his van had a broken tail light. The station says surveillance video then shows the driver exit the van holding a 2-year-old.

Collegedale police said the man tested 0.13 on a breath test, which is about 1 1/2 times the legal limit. Police said the man told officers the boy had been riding in his lap and that he had drunk six or seven beers, including one that was half-full and still cold inside the vehicle. The man was charged with DUI, reckless endangerment and probation violation.

Woman Who Demanded Conjugal Visit Charged With DUI

BUNNELL, Fla. -- A woman was charged with DUI after showing up at the Flagler County jail and demanding a conjugal visit with a specific inmate. The sheriff's office reports that a 45-year-old woman had a visitation appointment but was turned away because she was late. Also, the jail does not allow conjugal visits.

The woman drove away but reportedly returned a short time later. Jail guards called road patrol, because they suspected the woman had been drinking.

Deputies found the woman sitting in her car. She reportedly failed a field sobriety test, and a breath test showed her blood-alcohol content was 0.256 percent. Florida law considers a person impaired at 0.08.

The woman was charged with DUI and later released on $500 bail.
