Law Enforcement Code of Ethics

As a Law Enforcement Officer, my fundamental duty is to serve mankind; to safeguard lives and property; to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the Constitutional rights of all persons to liberty, equality and justice.

I will keep my private life unsullied as an example to all; maintain courageous calm in the face of danger, scorn or ridicule; develop self-restraint; and be constantly mindful of the welfare of others. Honest in thought and deed in both my personal and official life, I will be exemplary in obeying the laws of the land and the regulations of my department. Whatever I see or hear of a confidential nature or that is confided to me in my official capacity will be kept ever secret unless revelation is necessary in the performance of my duty.

I will never act officiously or permit personal feelings, prejudices, animosities or friendships to influence my decisions. With no compromise for crime and with relentless prosecution of criminal, I will enforce the law courteously and appropriately without fear or favor, malice or ill will, never employing unnecessary force or violence and never accepting gratuities.

I recognize the badge of my office as a symbol of public faith, and I accept it as a public trust to be held so long as I am true to the ethics of the police service. I will constantly strive to achieve these objectives and ideals, dedicating myself before God to my chosen profession...law enforcement.

Bellevue King County DUI Attorney: Washington State Trooper hurt in DUI accident

Bellevue King County DUI Attorney:  Washington State Trooper hurt in DUI accident

BELLEVUE, Wash. -- A Washington state trooper and two DUI suspects were hospitalized after a chain reaction crash on Interstate 405 near State Route 520 Thursday night.

Washington State Patrol spokesperson Julie Startup said a trooper, identified as Michael Porter, had pulled over a suspected drunk driver in a BMW on I-405 at SR 520 just before midnight.

The trooper and the driver were standing outside their vehicles as the trooper was reading his rights, when a woman driving a green Acura slammed into the back of the trooper's patrol car, which pushed into the back of the BMW.

The trooper and the male driver, a 32-year-old man from Bellingham, were struck by the hood of the BMW when it was pushed forward.

The suspected DUI driver, the trooper and the woman suffered potentially serious injuries in the crash. All three were taken to Overlake Hospital in Bellevue. Porter suffered injuries mostly to his leg; he has since been released from the hospital and is recovering at home.

The woman, a 26-year-old from Shoreline, will be investigated for DUI and vehicular assault.

Mukilteo Snohomish County DUI Attorney: Washington State Patrol named top DUI agency

Mukilteo Snohomish County DUI Attorney:  Washington State Patrol named top DUI agency

YAKIMA, Wash.-- If it seems like the State Patrol is tough on drunk driving, it's not just your imagination. The International Association of Chiefs of Police named the Washington State Patrol the top DUI agency for 2010.

State Patrol arrests about 20,000 impaired drivers a year. That's half of all DUI arrests in the state.  And about eight percent of those arrests happen in our region, and over half of those are in Yakima County

However, the award isn't just for the number of arrests. The State Patrol also has a specialized team.  In Yakima County they've identified the troopers with the most DUI enforcement success.

"We combine them into a team and they travel around in our district addressing certain areas. Everyday is a DUI emphasis as far as the Washington State Patrol is concerned," says Washington State Patrol Lieutenant Terry Liebrecht.

The award also took into consideration the state patrol's community outreach and work with legislators to impose stricter laws.

Just last week the mandatory tow law that requires towing the cars of people arrested for drunk driving went into effect.

This isn't the State Patrol's first award of this kind. In 2007, it was named best state police agency of its size.

Mukilteo Everett Snohomish County DUI Attorney: Travel to Canada with a DUI may get easier

Mukilteo Everett Snohomish County DUI Attorney:  Travel to Canada with a DUI may get easier

The federal government is looking at ways to ease bordercrossing restrictions on Americans with convictions for drunk driving, after getting complaints that border officers are turning away too many people.

A briefing note obtained under access-to-information laws show Canadian tourism officials have been lobbying the government to relax the rules because of concerns that tourism -particularly fishing and hunting industries -could be taking a hit.

Currently, U.S. citizens with such convictions can enter Canada only if certain conditions are met. They can enter if they have had 10 crime-free years since their conviction. If at least five years have passed, they can apply for a visa, but applications can take more than a year to process.

The last option is to apply for a temporary resident permit, but these are handed out only in "exceptional" cases.

In his briefing note, Canada Border Services Agency president Luc Portelance said CBSA and Citizenship and Immigration Canada were reviewing different options to relax some of the restrictions and "reduce bilateral irritants with the U.S."

For instance, they are considering letting border guards to allow entry "of foreign nationals with less serious inadmissibilities, including some DUI cases."

They are also looking at ways to improve communication with American travellers "caught off-guard by their inadmissibility" and to simplify relief options for them.

Luc Nadon, a CBSA spokesman, said Friday the proposed changes are still under review.

David Goldstein, president and CEO of the Tourism Industry Association of Canada, said Friday he is encouraged the government is talking about loosening some of the rules. Goldstein said the number of American tourists who spent at least one night Canada has steadily fallen from 15 million in 2002 to 11.7 million in 2010.

Goldstein stressed that he is not advocating for the borders to be wide open to criminals, but "there's a healthy balance that needs to be applied."

Goldstein said it's not just outdoor enthusiasts who are being turned away for long-ago DUI convictions, but business people who are coming to Canada to attend conferences.
