Anacortes Skagit County DUI Attorney: Extra DUI patrols to hit the streets

Anacortes Skagit County DUI Attorney: Extra DUI patrols to hit the streets

Local law enforcement agencies want to remind potential St. Patrick's Day revelers that they should celebrate safely.

With one of the biggest drinking holidays of the year approaching next week, representatives of several agencies said they will be conducting extra emphasis patrols on St. Patrick's Day and the weekend following this year, hoping to prevent serious or deadly crashes.

Sgt. Jennifer Sheahan-Lee of the Skagit County Sheriff's Office said law enforcement officials will be out in the afternoon and evening hours and recommend that people plan ahead if they are going to drink.

Last year's patrol led to nine arrests in the period around St. Patrick's Day. One of those arrests came at 11:45 a.m. the following day, Leary said.

CHELAN -- Chelan, Douglas and Okanogan Counties, WA - Law enforcement throughout Chelan, Douglas and Okanogan Counties will be out on the roadways between March 11 and 20 to arrest drunk drivers who are out partying during the St. Patrick's Day celebrations. Participating in these St. Patrick's Day patrols are the Brewster, East Wenatchee and Wenatchee Police Departments, the Chelan County Sheriff's Office, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and the Washington State Patrol.

Last year, during this same time period, a total number of 38 DUI arrests were made in Chelan, Douglas and Okanogan Counties.

In Washington State, the most frequent factor contributing to traffic deaths is still driver impairment. In 2009, traffic crashes killed 491 people on Washington's roadways. Impaired drivers accounted for 53.8 percent of the total (264 deaths).

"Drunk or drugged driving remains the leading cause of death in traffic crashes. These preventable crashes can be eliminated if everyone works to become a part of the solution," said Lowell Porter, Director of the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.

Another factor is the time of day that traffic deaths involving impaired drivers occur. More than two-thirds of impaired-driver-involved fatal collisions occurred during nighttime hours (6 pm to 6 am) in Washington (67.4 percent from 2000-2009).

Everett Lynnwood Snohomish County DUI Attorney: Area police planning more St. Patrick's Day patrols

Everett Lynnwood Snohomish County DUI Attorney: Area police planning more St. Patrick's Day patrols

By Paula Horton, Herald staff writer

OLYMPIA -- If you want to keep the luck o' the Irish on your side for St. Patrick's Day, law enforcement officials are saying "Don't drive drunk."

Extra officers will be patrolling Tri-City streets beginning today, looking for impaired drivers.

The emphasis patrols will run through March 20 -- meaning officers will be on the lookout for those celebrating St. Patrick's Day the weekend before and the weekend after.

Last year, 46 DUI arrests were made in the Tri-Cities during the same time period, officials said.

"Drunk or drugged driving remains the leading cause of death in traffic crashes," said Lowell Porter, director of the Washington Traffic Safety Commission. "These preventable crashes can be eliminated if everyone works to become a part of the solution."

In Washington, impaired drivers still are the most frequent factor contributing to traffic deaths, officials said.

In 2009, 491 people were killed on Washington's roads and impaired drivers accounted for 53.8 percent of those deaths.

Night-time driving -- between the hours of 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. -- also is a big factor, with more than two-thirds of fatal crashes then being DUI-related.

Agencies participating in the St. Patrick's Day patrols are the Kennewick, Pasco and Richland police departments, Franklin County Sheriff's Office and the Washington State Patrol.

The only DUI radio show in the United States ended its successful run today.  However, the show is revamping itself and will be up and running with a more expansive program very shortly.  Keep watching as this blog will announce it as soon as it is official.

I was privileged to be the show's final guest.  The host, Ken Sharp, deserves great credit for bringing the action and crime of DUI to the public's attention with the goal of changing societal behavior.  Great job Ken!

Here is a link to the final episode.  My interview can be heard at minute 40 of the mpg.
