SEATTLE - Twenty-two-year-old Jason Wong is convinced he will soon be walking and even snowboarding after an alleged drunk driver changed his life forever.
On December 12, 2009, Jason was hit by a fast-moving Corvette while he was helping unload luggage from his parked car. He pushed his 67-year-old father, Wah Wong, out of harm's way, but the oncoming car crushed Jason's left leg and right foot. Jason was remarkably lucid, calling 9-1-1 himself.
"If I became unconscious, I wasn't sure I was going to wake up from it with all the blood loss," Jason said. Doctors couldn't save the University of Washington graduate's leg. "All my muscle had been torn off and my bones were shattered in every different direction."
In the next seven weeks, Jason underwent nine surgeries including skin grafts, fighting off infection. Before the assault, he had been interviewing for his dream job as an aerospace engineer.
"I thought I had my life on track. and this curveball hits and it's very devastating," muses Jason. "A lot of times when I'm by myself, I play the whole "What if" game. What if I did this? What if I did that? "
As for the driver who hit him, Jason has these words: "I'm half his age but I'm more responsible than he is. What would I tell him? I don't know if I would cry, I don't know if I'd be mad. It would just be a mixture of emotions. But I would just simply say, "Look at what you did. "
The driver, 50-year-old Rodney Dean James, has been charged with two counts of vehicular assault. Charging papers allege James had a breath alcohol content of 0.16, twice the legal limit the night of the incident. He is expected to make a plea in King County Superior court later this week.
A "Save Jade West Cafe" fund has been set up at Wells Fargo Bank. Proceeds will help renovate the Wong home to accommodate a wheelchair and get a prosthesis for Jason.
