Drive Hammered, Get Nailed: Extra DUI Patrols Start This Weekend

We know it's a little early to start planning for the weekend, but it's never too early to start planning on how you're going to be safe when you get sauced. Especially if you know that King County is going to be rolling out extra officers, on the lookout for intoxicated motorists.

Starting Friday, the annual Drive Hammered, Get Nailed anti-DUI campaign is returning to the County, which means more law enforcement officials, more stops, and more sad folks wishing they'd either stayed sober, or designated a driver.

During this campaign last year, officers cited 438 people for DUI. However, last year's drunks got off easy--this is the first year that Hailey's Law, which mandates that any and all vehicles driven by drunk drivers be impounded for at least 12 hours. The law is named for Hailey French Huntley, who was involved in an accident with a drunk driver who was arrested, brought home, and then proceeded to take a cab back to her parked car. The driver hit Hailey head-on.

The additional enforcement will remain in place until after Labor Day Weekend, on September 5.
