As the final summer holiday approaches, law enforcement agencies across the country are gearing up. Labor Day weekend is one of the deadliest periods on the nation’s roads, and September 2 is the second most deadly day of the year, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a nonprofit group financed by the insurance industry. (The deadliest day is July 4, the institute said.)
Earlier this week, the U.S. Department of Transportation marked its annual enforcement crackdown and the launch of a new nationwide, multi-year advertising campaign aimed at getting drunk drivers off the road: “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”
The campaign targets drivers in the final weeks of summer, from August 19 through September 5. The efforts involve more than 10,000 police departments and other law enforcement agencies across the nation, who will be redoubling their efforts during this high-risk travel period to ensure that impaired drivers are detected and arrested, according to the Department.
“While we have made great strides in reducing drunk driving over the years, tragically, drunk driving remains one of the leading causes of death and injury on America’s roads,” Ray LaHood, Transportation Secretary, said in a statement. “Through our new national advertising campaign and stepped up law enforcement actions, we’re sending a powerful message to the American driving public.”
Each year, nearly 11,000 people are killed in crashes resulting from drunk driving, Secretary La Hood wrote on his blog “Fast Lane,” posted the same day as the Department of Transportation’s announcement. “These deaths are 100 percent preventable, but only if we can get drivers to stop getting behind the wheel when they’re impaired.”
A new analysis by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) showed the highest risk of being involved in a fatal crash with a drunk driver occurred between the hours of midnight and 3 a.m., when drunk driving crashes claimed a life every 23 minutes. As a result, efforts are particularly focused on nighttime enforcement.
Two thirds of the fatal crashes during these pre-dawn hours involved drunk drivers, according to the agency. The new ads feature “invisible” law enforcement officers observing alcohol-impaired individuals. The officers materialize to apprehend them when the drivers attempt to drive their vehicles. The ads convey the message that law enforcement officers are both omnipresent and vigilant in deterring drunk drivers, according to the Department of Transportation.
