Washington State DUI Lawyer: The DUI Investigation Handbook

Washington State DUI Lawyer:  The DUI Investigation Handbook

The following is an excerpt from the recently published The DUI Investigation Handbook.  This most valuable DUI Investigation book details in its 145 pages the entire DUI Investigation process law enforcement officers use to detect and investigate DUI drivers.  The DUI Investigation Handbook is available at over 100 locations including Barnes and Noble and Amazon.com.  David N. Jolly is the author of 5 DUI books and the first DUI App for iTunes in the United States.  His next book, The Drug DUI Handbook, is due for release in September, 2011, and is the first book of its kind in the United States.  Look for excerpts in late August, 2011.

Alcohol/Drug impairment OR medical issue?

A well trained DUI officer should be aware that a driver who exhibits signs of alcohol or drug impairment may actually not be impaired by either. There are instances when a driver who exhibits such signs may indeed be suffering from a medical condition and not alcohol or drug impairment. In cases such as these the officer should be aware of medical conditions that need attention for the welfare of the driver and/or alternatively, to ably distinguish the observations from alcohol or drug impairment.

Medical conditions may manifest themselves as slurred speech, confusion, lack of coordination, difficulty walking, poor memory and poor balance. Such conditions may be observed upon contact with the driver and may make performing the field sobriety tests impossible or the result unreliable. It must be noted that some of these medical conditions may ultimately prohibit individuals from driving but early stages of medical conditions or certain diseases may permit individuals to drive.
